Fashion Ecommerce SEO

I've run SEO inside a global fashion brand, mid-migration, on five markets at once.

I was Head of SEO at Superdry. I know what it's like to be mid-migration on five international market sites simultaneously, with a dev backlog, a constrained timeline and a product team with other priorities. I know what it takes to argue the SEO case to a senior stakeholder who's already signed off the migration plan. And I know what Search Console looks like when a migration goes wrong on a live fashion site.

Fashion has SEO problems that general ecommerce consultants miss - not because they're obscure, but because you only really learn them inside a fashion business.

Out-of-stock URLs: the question fashion gets wrong

A product goes out of stock - do you 301 it, noindex it, keep it live or remove it? The right answer depends on whether the product is gone for good, back next season, or replaced by a similar line. Get it wrong and you either torch link equity built over months or serve dead-end pages that damage crawl efficiency. Most fashion brands have no policy at all. They delete URLs and wonder why recovery is slow.

The brand versus category gap

You rank for your own brand terms. You don't rank for the category searches that bring in customers who've never heard of you. "Superdry hoodie" is easy. "Men's oversized hoodie" is where the traffic is - and where ASOS, Zalando and H&M are waiting. Closing that gap grows the business, and it takes category page authority built through architecture and internal linking, not more blog posts.

Variants, seasons and the crawl

A dress in 12 colours and 6 sizes is potentially 72 near-identical URLs. Without a canonical strategy they dilute each other and none of them ranks well. And fashion's seasonal content lives for 12 weeks - getting a winter category page indexed and ranking before the season opens means the crawl strategy had to be right months earlier.

Migrations are where fashion loses years of equity

Fashion replatforms constantly. I ran the SEO sign-off process across the Superdry Salesforce Commerce Cloud migrations for UK, Ireland, Germany, France and the global COM site - including live-versus-staging crawl comparisons per market before each go-live. That QA caught, among other things, staging URL patterns that didn't match production on the German site. Missed, that error becomes hundreds of broken redirects on launch day.

Results from the sector

For a leading UK lingerie brand, an hreflang and duplication investigation delivered a 12% organic traffic uplift on resolution. For a UK outdoor apparel brand, a technical review of key categories delivered Page 1 rankings for new target terms within two months. At Superdry, alongside the migration programme, I rebuilt the Digital PR approach to deliver 10+ DA70 links per campaign at less than a quarter of the previous cost, and built the internal business case for a content hub projecting +47,000 monthly sessions from 11 targeted articles.

Your brand terms were never the problem. The customers you haven't met yet are searching category terms right now - and they're finding ASOS. That's the gap between a fashion site that converts its own fans and one that grows.
