Beauty & Cosmetics SEO

The beauty brands that win organic are visible before the customer knows which product they want.

Someone searching "best shampoo for fine hair" or "vitamin C serum for sensitive skin" is a high-intent buyer with no brand preference yet. That's the acquisition moment - and most beauty brands aren't visible for it, because they've only optimised for their own product names.

I've worked across beauty and personal care for over a decade - strategic SEO lead across a six-brand global haircare portfolio via Zenith, plus personal care, trichology, luxury fragrance and hygiene brands through Zenith, Reload Digital and Kantar, across UK, European and global markets.

Concern and ingredient search is the acquisition channel

Customers search by concern ("hair loss treatment women"), ingredient ("niacinamide") and technique ("how to layer skincare") long before they search by brand. The brands that own those terms acquire new customers. The brands that don't are living off existing awareness - which means they're not growing organically, whatever the traffic graph says.

The retail intermediary problem

Search almost any beauty product and Boots, Lookfantastic and Amazon rank above the brand's own site. That won't change. The play is building presence where retailers can't follow: ingredient and education content, formulation-specific searches, brand story content and the long-tail product queries where the brand's own depth wins.

Page speed, done as a programme

Beauty ecommerce is mobile-first with heavy imagery, so speed costs you rankings and sales at once. On the haircare portfolio, the site speed programme was the main optimisation focus of an entire year - starting from a full Core Web Vitals audit of a baseline that was failing across the board, and run through bi-weekly speed calls with the client and their development agency, plus a separate migration and speed ticket pipeline for the brand's store platform. That's what speed work looks like when it's a programme rather than a report: prioritised tickets, developer relationships and accountability call by call. I've since run Core Web Vitals work for a global haircare content platform on the same principles.

Portfolio strategy means hard choices

Managing SEO across six sub-brands at once - as I did on that haircare portfolio - means you can't treat them equally. Some brands have more authority and a clearer opportunity. Portfolio strategy is deciding honestly where to invest and where to hold, not spreading budget evenly and hoping.

E-E-A-T scrutiny is coming for skincare

Content making claims about acne, eczema or rosacea is increasingly treated as quasi-medical under Google's quality guidelines. Qualified authors, cited references and systematic trust signals are becoming the price of ranking. This will get more important, not less.

The retailers own your product searches and they always will. The concern and ingredient searches are still open - and that's where your next customer starts, before they've ever typed a brand name. If your organic strategy starts and ends with your own products, the growth was never going to show up.
