Energy & Utilities SEO

B2B energy buyers research you long before the first meeting.

Energy SEO splits into two very different briefs. A consumer supplier competes for switching intent in a landscape the comparison aggregators dominate. A B2B energy company has an entirely different audience: procurement teams and energy managers researching generation capacity, power purchase agreements and long-term supply - months before anyone picks up a phone.

I worked with a European energy generation and wholesale business on site migration and technical SEO, via CTI Digital.

What the work involved

The engagement covered migration redirect planning, a full technical audit and Core Web Vitals work across a complex multilingual corporate estate. The audit findings show what accumulates on a large B2B energy site: dozens of redirect chains. Hundreds of indexable URLs missing from the sitemap - with a set of orphaned sitemap entries pointing the other way. Duplicate title tags across language versions, many never translated. A large slice of the estate, mostly PDF documents, missing canonical tags entirely. Layout shift failing at template level. Schema present but blank. Every one of those quietly undermines how a serious buyer's research journey finds - or doesn't find - the business.

Credibility content beats volume content in B2B energy

A power purchase agreement isn't found on Google and closed in a day. But organic search shapes the shortlist - procurement teams researching which providers operate at the right scale, in the right markets, with the right credentials. Content that demonstrates technical depth and operational credibility is worth more than any volume play in this sector.

Consumer energy: respect the aggregators

MoneySuperMarket and Uswitch own the switching terms and that's not changing. A consumer supplier's realistic organic ground is adjacent: smart home content, green tariff education, energy efficiency advice - authority-builders that feed switching intent over time. And energy claims sit under Ofgem and ASA scrutiny, with greenwashing attention increasing, so the compliance envelope shapes the content plan from day one.

Migrations in energy have extra failure modes

Pricing calculators, account portals, tariff tools and regulatory disclosure pages all generate dynamic URLs and crawl complexity that a standard migration checklist misses. Moving that to a new platform without SEO sign-off in the go-live criteria is how energy sites lose rankings they don't recover for quarters.

If your site doesn't hold up under the research a procurement team does before they ever contact you, you're losing shortlists you never knew existed. The technical layer is where that credibility starts - and as that audit shows, it's usually carrying more silent damage than anyone inside the business expects.
