Financial Services SEO

Finance is the sector where Google trusts slowest and punishes fastest.

Financial content is YMYL - Your Money or Your Life - by Google's own classification. Stricter quality signals, heavier E-E-A-T requirements, and more severe consequences in core updates when a site isn't meeting the standard. You can't iterate your way to authority in finance with thin content to see what sticks.

I've worked with financial services clients across global banking, insurance comparison and listed real estate - including one of the world's largest international banks, via Zenith.

What a global bank's technical SEO actually looks like

That banking engagement ran across the bank's global estate - an SEO reporting and dashboard programme covering everything from careers and sustainability to corporate and investment banking, alongside a technical audit of the international setup. And the recurring lesson from auditing estates at that scale applies to any multi-market finance brand: it's common to find hreflang missing or broken entirely, and URL structures too inconsistent to fix it without standardising the geography first - "en" meaning a language in one directory pattern and sitting inside a country path in another. In international finance, the technical layer is the strategy.

Compliance shapes what you can say

Financial promotions carry FCA requirements. Investment content has disclosure obligations. Insurance comparison has its own rule set. An SEO strategy that produces content optimised for a search term but non-compliant with the regulatory framework is a liability, not an asset. The brief gets built inside the compliance envelope from the start - which is the same discipline I apply in iGaming and healthcare, the other regulated sectors I work in.

E-E-A-T is the prerequisite, not a nice-to-have

Author credentials matter in finance. So do institutional trust signals - regulatory status disclosures, advisory credentials, review profiles. Google is looking for reasons to trust the entity behind the content, and building that systematically is slow. It's also the only reliable way to rank for high-value financial terms and hold the position through core updates.

Be realistic about the aggregators

"Best savings rates", "cheapest car insurance" - the high-volume comparison terms are owned by aggregator platforms with more authority than any challenger will build soon. The workable strategy is knowing where the aggregators can't go deep: product-specific queries, long-tail intent and the expertise content only the provider can credibly write. I've worked the comparison side too, on insurance comparison SEO via Blueclaw, and for a UK-listed real estate investment trust via Zenith.

Finance rewards patience and punishes shortcuts harder than any sector I work in. If you want rankings this quarter, I'm the wrong consultant. If you want an organic presence that compounds and survives core updates, that's a strategy conversation worth having now - because the trust you'll need in two years gets built from today.
